Ficus Plant Varieties

Ficus plant varieties are among the most popular houseplants on the market.ficus plant varieties The genus includes over 850 species of trees, shrubs and vines, hailing from tropical regions around the globe. Many are grown as indoor ornamentals and outdoor landscape plants, while others are grown for their edible fruit. Ficus is a genus that is easy to grow and maintain, making it a great choice for anyone looking to add some greenery to their home.

Ficus pumila, commonly known as a rubber tree or Indian Rubber Tree, is one of the most popular ficus plant varieties. It is a versatile, hardy shrub or tree that can be grown in shade or sun. It does best with indirect light and can withstand dry, warm conditions (though the leaves will yellow if exposed to direct sunlight for too long). It is also tolerant of low to moderate watering, but needs to be kept moist. The tree can be grown in a pot, sculpted into topiary or hedging, and even used to make a living wall.

The ficus is an attractive houseplant, displaying large, violin-shaped leaves in shades of green with lighter veins. Its tall, slender trunk is perfect for adding height to any room. It can be trained to grow in a specific direction, or it can be left to its own devices and allowed to grow into a natural bush. The ficus is easy to propagate by stem cuttings. To do so, take a healthy branch and cut about 12 to 14 inches of length. Place the cutting into a pot filled with well-draining soil and cover it with clear plastic to act as a greenhouse. Place the container in a sunny spot and keep it moist, but out of direct sun, for two months. Once the new roots appear, you can transplant the ficus to its own 6-inch pot and watch it thrive.

The ficus elastica, which is sometimes called the Indian Rubber Tree or Robusta Ficus, is another common type of ficus plant. It has a more slender, less dramatic silhouette than other Ficus species and can be grown to a very tall height indoors. Like most ficuses, the elastica produces latex, which was used in the production of rubber before it was replaced by synthetic alternatives. The plant can be grown in the ground outdoors or in a container, but it is prone to dropping its leaves when environmental conditions change. If you notice this happening, try to reduce the amount of fertilizer you use and let the soil dry out a bit more between waterings.
